The Series 400 Soft Seal Shelter features a unique design that acts like a shelter and dock seal combined. The Series 400 Soft Seal Shelter provides foam side pads and dock shelter style curtain that allows full access to the rear of the trailer and yields under off-center trucks impact, due to improper positioning at the loading dock.

  • The Soft Seal Shelter to provide tight seal against truck and prevent weather, dust, bugs, exhaust fumes from entering building.
  • High resilient premium grade polyurethane foam, bonded with high quality liquid adhesive to kiln dried wood, all are encased inside the dock seal fabric cover to protect it from abuse and the elements (optional 14 gauge galvanized steel backing also available).
  • All pads are equipped with air vents to help minimize rupture, and drain holes equipped
    with brass grommet type drain holes to reduce moisture build-up.

A properly specified Chalfant Series 400 Soft Seal Shelter can have a service range from 11’0” to 13’6” high and 8’0” to 8’6” wide, sealing the wide variety of over-the-road trucks at your dock.

Soft Seal Dock Shelter Construction Summary..

Standard laboratory tests and field experience with various dock seal, dock shelter and rail shelter cover fabrics provide long life and superior tear strength, abrasion resistance, resistance to low temperature cold cracking and weatherability. Chalfant dock seal, dock shelter and rail shelter fabric selections include; vinyl, hypalon and neoprene coated nylon. See fabric weights, types and colors in our fabric performance section.

  1. Head Curtain Assembly – Reinforce fiberglass top attached to wood frame and supported by mounting brackets. The head curtain is attached to head frame by lags and includes three (3) wear pleats at corners of the curtain
  2. Wood Mounting Base – Chalfant Dock Seals are factory assembled and mounted to kiln dried 2″ wood and feature “Weathertight Construction” completely encased inside of the pad cover to protect it from abuse and outside elements
  3. Adhesive – Polyurethane foam pads are bonded to the wood mounting base with a high quality liquid chemical adhesive for added support.
  4. Premium Grade Polyurethane Foam Pad – Foam pad is standard 1.00 pound density per cubic foot weight with a 30-pound compression factor, compressing from 12″ to 4″. Resilient from -50F to +180F. Plus, outstanding aging and non-sagging properties. (Fire retardant foam is available upon request).
  5. Fiberglass Stays – Stays to be contained between outer and inner covers to insure constant pressure with the truck..
  6. Thread – Chalfant carefully selects all materials for durability, including thread which is polyester heavy-duty, minimum size 138 bonded. Meets Federal Specification V-T-285
  7. Guide Stripes and Bottom Wear Face – Made of extra layer of vinyl coated fabric sewn on the face of the side curtains.
  8. Cushion Bottom Seal – Secured to the inside side pad, cushions seal to truck sides during use and return to shape upon truck departure.
  9. Drain Holes – Our dock seals are equipped with grommet type drain holes to reduce moisture build-up.
  10. Mounting Angle – Galvanized 14 gauge steel mounting brackets are used for standard installations.

Dock Seal Fabric Performance Specification

Our full range of selected quality fabrics; Vinyl, “High Tear Resistant Guardian 60” fabrics and other optional fabrics, in a variety of colors and available fabric weights, make durable seals and shelters. The dock seal/shelter lifespan depends on the application; lighter duty fabrics have a lower investment cost and are best suited for low volume truck applications.

The Guardian 60, is the most durable and abrasion resistant fabric, it will endure the most demanding applications at the loading dock. Durability of the dock seal will be enhanced if it includes one of the following; wear face, guardian face, guardian pleats. For color selection we recommend black and most loading dock professionals do agree, that is the best color choice due to the contact of dirt, grime and oil on the back over-the-road trucks/trailers and contact with a dock seal/shelter, eventually the face of any dock fabric will turn black.
