Chalfant Series 500 Rail Dock Shelter
Chalfant Series 500 Rail Shelter protects areaways between rail docks, door and freight car openings against environment. Provides year-round protection for material handling operations at dock areas where rail cars are loaded and unloaded. Designed for either platform or non-platform docks.
When extended, the unit is pressed snugly against the side of the rail car by arm and track assembly extended by spring torsion. When not in use the shelter is retracted snugly to the face of the building by easy-to-operate balanced pulley and rope assembly to allow for rail car passage.
Rail shelters are available as: (a) 4-sided units which offer maximum protection of all 4 sides where no platforms exist. (b) 3-sided units for use where platforms exist. (c) Rolling rail shelters which give 3-sided protection where the platform extends out from the building too far for practical use of other types of rail shelters.

- Head Curtain Assembly – The curtain length shall be equal to the overall unit width and is attached to the frame by fasteners, standard head curtain height is 24″.
- Rollers for Arm and Track – Rollers are four wheel design, made of galvanized steel tested to 1,000 lb. load limit, equipped with needle bearings and sealed. Four rollers furnished with each unit.
- Track – Continuous slot hot-dipped galvanized 14-gauge steel.
- Arm and Framing – Galvanized pipe arms with galvanized fittings and continuous hot-dipped galvanized 14-gauge steel channel.
- Head Curtain and Side Curtains – Choice of fabrics 22 oz vinyl, 16 oz hypalon, 16 oz neoprene, 40 oz neoprene and 40 oz vinyl, in a wide variety of colors.
- Guide Stripes – Made of extra layer of vinyl coated fabric sewn on the face of the side curtains.
- Fiberglass Stays – Stays to be contained between outer and inner covers to insure constant pressure with the truck.
- Thread – Chalfant carefully selects all materials for durability, including thread which is polyester heavy-duty, minimum size 138 bonded. Meets Federal Specification V-T-285
- Four Sided Rail Shelter – Optional four sided rail shelter provides maximum protection of all 4 sides where no platform exist.
- Mounting Angle – Galvanized 14 gauge steel mounting brackets are used for standard installations.

Dock Seal Fabric Performance Specification
Our full range of selected quality fabrics; Vinyl, “High Tear Resistant Guardian 60” fabrics and other optional fabrics, in a variety of colors and available fabric weights, make durable seals and shelters. The dock seal/shelter lifespan depends on the application; lighter duty fabrics have a lower investment cost and are best suited for low volume truck applications.
The Guardian 60, is the most durable and abrasion resistant fabric, it will endure the most demanding applications at the loading dock. Durability of the dock seal will be enhanced if it includes one of the following; wear face, guardian face, guardian pleats. For color selection we recommend black and most loading dock professionals do agree, that is the best color choice due to the contact of dirt, grime and oil on the back over-the-road trucks/trailers and contact with a dock seal/shelter, eventually the face of any dock fabric will turn black.
